What is Group Self Build Housing?
Building your own home has been an increasingly popular idea over the last 40 years. People with a variety of skills group together to pool expertise and give their spare time to construct a development of houses. It can be a way of founding a close-knit community which develops through sharing skills, time and effort.

Why do increasing numbers of people find the long, hard slog of self build worthwhile? For many it is an opportunity to get that first foothold on the housing market ladder. With the ever increasing cost of house prices, some see it as a way of being able to own a better home than they could normally afford or simply a chance to increase their living accommodation to allow for a growing family. An ideal group has to be balanced with a mixture of skills and professions as well as complementary interests and attitudes. Many things are taken into account when allocating the membership of a scheme. You obviously need skilled tradesmen however, equally important, there should be someone experienced at administration and book-keeping. Group members come from a variety of professions and walks of life but they each have something to offer to the success of the project.
